Basic & Supplemental Group Life Insurance Plans
Basic Group Life Insurance is a type of life insurance that covers an entire group. The employer is the policy holder and the employees are the ones who are covered by the group policy. This type of coverage is usually part of an employee benefits package.
Costs of the policy are partially or totally paid for by the employer. Typical coverage amount for group life is equal to 1 or 2 times the employees’ annual salary.
Supplemental Group Life is often offered in conjunction with basic group life; this type of coverage allows employees’ to purchase additional amounts of coverage. The employee chooses the amount of coverage to suit personal needs and circumstances and pays the cost for the premiums.
Basic Group Life and Supplemental Group Life are usually not portable. This means when an employee leaves an employer, the policies can not be carried with them upon retirement or termination of employment.
